Edith Shiro, 2018 Hispanic Woman of Distinction, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Edith Shiro is doing her best to make the life of those who come into her sphere a happier and more beautiful place.
For the last 25 years as a psychologist in private practice, Edith has worked with a diverse clientele struggling with a wide range of emotional and real-life issues to make their lives better.
She counsels teens going through cultural, sexual or vocational challenges to help them achieve their best and happiest selves. Edith also helps Latin American refugees and torture survivors to adjust to their new lives and better assimilate into American culture.
She advises couples who have challenges with communication or parenting struggles and those who have endured domestic violence. Edith serves as an expert commentator for Latin-American print, radio and TV outlets such as “Despierta America, “El News Café,” “El Chateo”, “Las Picaras TV” and more.
A firm believer that finding happiness is within anyone’s grasp, Edith has participated in a cultural exchange with government and national leaders to learn about Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness program which has served as a global model.
She has worked locally and internationally by organizing and speaking at World Happiness Summits and Festivals.
Last year, Edith joined other Latinos and made a spiritual pilgrimage to Northern Spain’s famous Camino de Santiago de Compostela(aka The Way of St. James). She also traveled to Poland and Lithuania’s concentration and refugee camps to further pursue lessons that would help her better serve her patients to achieve more peaceful and fulfilling lives.
A lover of art, Edith is a consultant and curator for the works of emerging Latin American artists in South Florida.
She helps expose and spread local talent into the community and beyond.
A native of Venezuela, Edith graduated Catholic University there and then pursued her Masters and Doctorate degrees at New York’s Yeshiva University. She received additional specialized education in family therapy at the Ackerman Institute and international studies at New York University.
Fluent in Spanish, English and Hebrew, Edith served on the board of Miami’s Jewish Community Center where she received awards as both Best Chairperson and Best Volunteer.
She also works with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation of Florida, the Live Modern School of Music, the Creative District in Liberty City and other arts and cultural groups.
Edith practices yoga and meditation, loves playing guitar and singing, and enjoys mountain hiking and skiing, along with her son, Ariel Gelrud. Dr. Shiro continues to spread peace and happiness through each endeavor that she pursues
