I enjoyed my time with Grace. It was so fun to see my job through the eyes of an 8 year old.
I never thought of it as anything so extraordinary to share a day in my life with her, but afterwards, my friends were so in love with the story of Grace shadowing me for a day and how it must be such an amazing experience for a young girl to design and see her creations made—a dream job. It really made me appreciate the fact that I am fortunate to have a creative job that I really enjoy.
Yes, there are also days that are not like this, but I really do get the opportunity to do so many interesting things that others will never get to experience. And new exciting opportunities and challenges still cross my path almost every day. This is something that I always aspired to do for as long as I can remember.
When I was Grace’s age my mom was teaching me to sew and cut patterns. I never thought I would do anything else except design. I just went for it and somehow with the support of my family, got through design school and made my life in NY.
I hope that Grace’s day with me makes her feel confident that she can do anything she wants. If this is something she really wants to pursue, hopefully I’ve given her the little bit of knowledge and behind the scenes insight to see that it’s possible.
Maybe I’ll be welcoming Grace permanently to NYC some day!
