A Solid Backup Solution for Your Small Business

The Virtualization Difference

Virtualization refers to taking any of the backups and setting one up in minutes as a live simulated copy of the protected computer, complete with running applications, current data and network settings, if the protected computer fails. This is the core benefit of a BDR, the quickest way to get up and running while the protected computer is repaired or replaced.
The difference in virtualization technology between the lower-end Alto and the higher-end Siris is in where virtualization occurs and the capacity of the appliance.

In Alto, virtualization is a hybrid technology:

  • • Alto establishes an encrypted link to Datto’s data center, where the virtualization occurs on its advanced servers.
  • • The running virtual computer is not on the Alto; it is off site.
  • • It is surprisingly fast.

In Siris, virtualization occurs on the appliance. That’s one reason Siris is larger and more expensive.

Does where virtualization occur matter? Alto requires an Internet connection to virtualize. If a storm takes out your office’s Internet connection and damages your protected computer, you won’t be able to virtualize on site with Alto. However, you can arrange with your reseller to have Datto virtualize your computer in their data center, which you can then access remotely from any Internet-connected computer.
Siris has models that can protect an unlimited number of computers with several terabytes of onboard storage. Alto has storage that varies from 150 GB up to 1 terabyte (1000 GBs). Siris starts at 500 GBs and goes up to 40 terabytes for the largest businesses.

Protect Your Business

Consider whether the Alto is the right choice for your small business backup and disaster recovery needs. You might find its affordability and powerful features are just what you need to keep your business’s IT infrastructure up and running in the case of a disaster event.
