Journey of a Female Comic is actress/comedienne Kiki Melendez’ feature debut depicting an honest and funny account of Melendez’ life growing up in small town of Puerto Plata, raised by a single immigrant mother in New York City, then her story as she pursues a career in Hollywood where she became a trailblazing Producer and TV personality.
“I am so grateful to AMC Theaters for supporting and nurturing independent women and minority filmmakers like myself,” said Melendez. “And our inclusion within the Dominican Film Festival is incredibly exciting and rewarding.”
The film stars Edward James Olmos, Jacob Vargas, Esai Morales, Nadine Velazquez, the late Lupe Ontiveros, Maria Conchita Alonso and Guy Ecker. It features lively conversations and archival footage with Aaron Spelling, Usher, Sofia Vergara, Shakira and Marc Anthony. The film was directed by Erick Crespo and Melendez and narrated by Robert W. Walker.
Melendez is best known for creating Galavision’s “Kiki Desde Hollywood” in 1999 and Showtime Network’s hit show, “Hot Tamales Live!” in 2008, the longest running all-female comedy show, now available on HULU.
The official transcripts of Kiki Melendez’ Journey of A Female Comic have been requested for the permanent Core Collection at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Library.
“Journey of A Female Comic” fits perfectly within our AMC Independent programming initiative, which opens our screens to movies that resonate with our diverse audiences,” said Nikkole Denson-Randolph, Vice President of Alternative Content at AMC. “Kiki Melendez’ story is honest, entertaining and connects with many of our guests.”
