Kiki Melendez An Entertainment Pioneer

The most moving part of Melendez’s bilingual docu-comedy is her personal narrative. She discusses her mother’s immigration from the small town of Puerto Plata to New York City as well as her artistic journey. She draws strength from her mother’s revealing words, that “Our culture confuses fame with greatness,” and talks about her goals and setbacks along the way. The life of a Latina entertainer has no guarantees, she says, and her perseverance, dedication and strong spirit have helped her make a name for herself in one of the most difficult fields of work.
As a Hispanic businesswoman, producer, writer, actress and comedienne, Kiki Melendez has created her own destiny through years of passionate struggle. Through it all, she has always kept an eye out to give others a hand up to success. She wanted this film to be the voice of Latinos in America and to showcase the efforts of many talented Hispanic media professionals to gain a position in domestic English/Spanish TV programming. As Kiki jokes, “we don’t have an Al Sharpton, so somebody had to do it!”

Melendez sees her talent as a gift, closing out with the reminder that her goal is to “unite all humanity through laughter.” She has spent every ounce of her energy and sold all her jewelry on The Journey of a Female Comic a success, and it definitely shows. The documentary received glowing reviews after her showing of the short at The Global Film Festival 2011 in her motherland, the Miami based Hispanicize 2012 Social Media and Film Showcase and most recently at the Los Angeles screening, and its success has only just begun to grow, revealing that Melendez’ talents have universal reach and appeal to all Americans.
