What Will the Death of Castro Mean To Future US Relations?

What could it mean to the US economy?

Here are three possibilities on the lifting the embargo and positive impacts on both countries:

1.   Gain access to Cuba’s new deep water supertanker port in the Mariel Harbor with a surrounding free trade zone.

The development will eventually cover 180 square miles and will be able to handle up to 4 million cargo containers a year. This is good for Cuba and the US as the closest supertanker port on the East Coast would be Jacksonville.

2.   The entire island needs to rebuild its infrastructure.

Right now the Chinese and Brazilians have been taking on the job, but this could prove to be more cost-efficient if undertaken by the US, provide jobs and a strategic foothold.

3.   Leverage Cuba’s advanced medical biotechnology industries.

There is the impending danger that if the President-elect makes good on his promises to dismantle all of the progress made by the Obama administration, this approach might encourage Havana to turn once again to Moscow and Beijing for support which could result in a throwback to a new Cold War scenario giving our frenemies a strategic foothold only 90 miles from our shores.

My hope and that of many others is that the Cuban people finally get a break, enjoy a peaceful transition to a more democratic government, a return to the rule of law and increased economic stability and finally a reunification of the Cuban people in the country and in exile.
