Cleveland Rocks
There’s more to the city, however, than just the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cleveland, Ohio calls itself “The New American City,” and there are plenty of reasons for locals to be proud. Says Mayor Frank G. Jackson, “Cleveland has heart. We are a city with a long and rich history. We are a city of hope and opportunity where people expect quality life. We have a world-class orchestra, world-class medical facilities, and we are recognized as one of the most livable cities and one of the best places to visit. We are a city of one people, one community, living and working together, with respect, justice and equality. We are a great city. We are Cleveland.”
Cleveland is home to more than 117 ethnic groups speaking more than 60 languages. Today, this mix of ethnic heritage, unique customs, and history can be found throughout the city’s many neighborhoods. As the city has grown, each ethnic neighborhood has managed to preserve much of its cultural background in places of worship, restaurants, and festivals.
Cleveland’s 55,000 Hispanic citizens represent a thriving Latino melting pot, with migrants from Puerto Rico and immigrants from Mexico, Cuba, South and Central America, and Spain. Seventy percent of the Spanish-speaking population are well-established Puerto Ricans, most of who arrived from the ’40s through the ’60s, and Cleveland is proud to be home to the largest concentration of Puerto Ricans in Ohio.
Puerto Rican Friendly Days, held every July since 1969 in the near West Side Tremont neighborhood, is an annual Latin festival with a traditional Puerto Rican parade. The annual Festival Hispano at Cuyahoga Community College draws audiences to see Mexican dancers and hear traditional mariachi music. Brazilian Carnaval is Cleveland’s local version of the ultimate Brazilian party. The annual costume ball offers live samba music, professional carnival dancers, and caipirinha.
