How Latinas Can Ignite Change During Women’s History Month and Beyond

by Tina Trevino

There are many ways we can do it as individual Latinas and as a community of Latinas

Women’s History Month is a dedicated month for recognizing the contributions of countless women to the struggles of equality in our country.  This year’s theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” It’s about recognizing women who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination from our lives and institutions.

Throughout history, women’s achievements have often been downplayed or erased. Women’s History Month provides a dedicated space to highlight the remarkable contributions of women in various fields, from science and politics to art and social justice. It shines a light on the countless ways women have shaped the world we live in today.

By learning about the struggles and triumphs of women who came before us, we can draw inspiration and courage for our own journeys. Young girls benefit from seeing role models who defy stereotypes and pave the way for future generations.

Just as Latinos are not one homogenous group, neither are women. Women’s History Month acknowledges the diversity of experiences and perspectives of “women.” It encourages us to learn from and celebrate the contributions of women from different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.

It’s important to remember that celebrating women’s achievements and advocating for their equality isn’t something that starts on March 1st and ends on March 31st. We need to continue learning and celebrating women throughout the year, and all work towards creating a more equitable and just society for all genders.

Being a Latina, we also want to look within our own Latin community and celebrate the many contributions of Latinas of the past and those making a difference today.

There are many ways we can do it…

As Individuals

  1. Learn about Latinas’ history and achievements: Read books, watch documentaries, listen to podcasts, and explore online resources that highlight the diverse contributions of Latinas throughout history and in the present day. By delving into the stories of women throughout history, we gain a deeper understanding of the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped our world. It encourages critical thinking and challenges us to question traditional narratives about history and gender roles.
  2. Support Latina-owned businesses: Shop at Latina-owned restaurants, boutiques, and online stores. Utilize their professional services and recommend them to others.
  3. Read books by Latina authors: Immerse yourself in the voices and perspectives of Latinas by reading fiction, non-fiction, and poetry by Latina writers.
  4. Donate to organizations supporting Latinas: Support organizations that empower Latinas through education, leadership development, and advocacy.
  5. Share your knowledge: Educate your friends and family about the contributions of Latinas and encourage them to do the same.
  6. Amplify Latina voices on social media: Follow, share, and engage with Latinas who are creating content, raising awareness, and advocating for change.

As a Community:

  1. Organize or attend events: Participate in women’s business events, film screenings, panel discussions, art exhibitions, or cultural celebrations that highlight the achievements of Latinas.
  2. Volunteer your time: Mentor Latina youth, offer pro bono services to Latina-owned businesses, or volunteer with organizations supporting Latinas.
  3. Advocate for policy changes: Contact your elected officials and urge them to support policies that benefit Latinas, such as access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Challenge existing power structures and advocate for equal opportunities and representation for all genders.
  4. Celebrate cultural traditions: Participate in cultural events like festivals, parades, or dance performances that celebrate the heritage of Latinas.

By actively participating in and reflecting on the significance of Women’s History Month, we can contribute to a world where the contributions of all women are recognized, valued, and celebrated.

Remember, every action, big or small, can contribute to celebrating the contributions of Latinas and advocating for their continued empowerment. Let’s use Women’s History Month as an opportunity to amplify their voices and create a more equitable future for all.
