International Youth Day: Empowering the Agents of Change

by Tina Trevino

In a world facing unprecedented challenges, the role of young people is more critical than ever.

International Youth Day (IYD), recognized annually on August 12th, is a global observance dedicated to celebrating the power, creativity, and contributions of young people worldwide. It is a day to not only acknowledge the challenges and opportunities facing our youth but also to highlight their vital role as partners in building a more sustainable and equitable future.

The history of International Youth Day traces back to 1999 when the UN General Assembly endorsed the recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. The first official IYD was celebrated in 2000, and since then, it has served as a platform to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community.

Each year, IYD is centered around a specific theme that reflects the most pressing concerns of young people. The theme for IYD 2025, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” places a strong emphasis on the transformative role of young people in translating the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local realities. This theme recognizes that youth are not just passive beneficiaries of development but are active agents of change, innovation, and leadership. This focus on “local youth actions” underscores a crucial shift in perspective: the realization that global challenges must be addressed through community-driven efforts, and young people are uniquely positioned to lead these initiatives.

The importance of International Youth Day is far-reaching:

  1. Amplifying Youth Voices and Engagement: IYD provides a platform for young people to express their perspectives, share their ideas, and advocate for their rights. It encourages meaningful youth participation in decision-making processes at all levels—from local communities to international forums. By giving young people, a seat at the table, we ensure that the policies and programs being developed are relevant and effective for them.
  2. Highlighting Global Challenges and Opportunities: IYD brings global attention to the critical issues that affect young people, such as access to quality education, employment opportunities, mental health, and climate change. It serves as a call to action for governments, civil society, and the private sector to invest in youth development and create an enabling environment where young people can thrive.
  3. Promoting Intergenerational Solidarity: By focusing on the shared goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda, IYD encourages collaboration between different generations. It fosters an understanding that the wisdom and experience of older generations, combined with the innovative ideas and energy of the youth, are essential for tackling complex global challenges.
  4. Showcasing Youth-Led Solutions: IYD is a celebration of the countless ways young people are already making a difference in their communities. It showcases youth-led initiatives and innovations that are driving progress toward the SDGs, from local environmental campaigns to social entrepreneurship projects. This inspires other young people to act and demonstrates that age is not a barrier to creating meaningful change.

In a world facing unprecedented challenges, the role of young people is more critical than ever. International Youth Day is a powerful reminder that by investing in and empowering the youth, we are not just investing in the future—we are investing in the present and building a better world for all.
