Sylvia Olmos, former Cub Master and current Secretary of Troop 1 in Carmel, agrees that “You will find that the majority of adults truly guide, but take a backstage role in planning the course of the troop.
We manage the money, the programs, purchase equipment, conduct meetings at night, and arrange transportation to sites, etc. Scouts depend on a strong support system of hard-working adults to help them achieve their goals and succeed,” says Sylvia.
Scouts understand that they need to overcome challenges together. They learn to respect each other, their community and nature, and ensure everyone has a chance to participate.
Sylvia adds: “This way, by developing their leadership skills, scouts can invest a lot of time in and work into bettering the places we live in. This creates a style of leadership and set of credentials that open the door for the boys to find better jobs and be successful anywhere they go.” Fostering positive leadership that prepares young Scouts for their adult lives requires dedication and hard work, but ultimately it helps Scouts to become lifelong role models.
The investment of time to support young people
Sharing one’s time to support young people in their journeys toward adulthood can be a laborious effort that requires a lot of physical and emotional energy from a person, but over time it becomes rewarding.
Ultimately, it makes a real difference in shaping young people into committed leaders who are key to their communities. Boy Scouts learn essential character traits and self-respect through exposure to strong, healthy adult leaders who lead and educate via their behavior and teachings. For these young individuals, working with positive role models often yields the same result: they value this early education their entire lives and refer back to it throughout adulthood.
Scouting is the start for entrepreneurial ventures at a young age for some people. While enabling experience is one of the strongest assets of the Boy Scouts program, it doesn’t necessarily make the boys good leaders. Learning leadership through scouting is more about learning how to lead people and overcoming challenges and unknown situations.
