Preparing For an Employee’s First Day

.
Ok, but I hired the person to work
Now that you have laid a firm foundation you can start to delegate work to the new hire.
The first assignment is your opportunity to:
- Show the new hire how the company services its external/ internal clients
- Demonstrates the company’s orientation to producing high quality output
- Teach the new hire how to use key technology applications
The new hire’s supervisor should set aside time to delegate and review the assignment. If I am the supervisor, I generally make time to check-in periodically with the new hire to answer questions. I strive to schedule this Q&A time on my calendar to make sure I keep it available.
At the end of the first day, meet with the new hire to learn how the day went. If you sell a product, give samples to the new hire. Hand him/ her the business cards and once again express excitement about the new hire joining the company. This will not only show the new hire that you care, it will also commence the process of making him/ her an ambassador champion for your product.
Conclusion
The new hire’s first day should focus on establishing a firm foundation by acquainting him/her with the culture of the company and the people who set the culture. It is expensive to replace an employee. Effective on-boarding will enable the new hire to establish a network and foster a spirit of collaboration thereby improving employee retention.
