Making Progress But More Work Remains
Elias says there is still more work to be done in terms of connecting with Hispanic residents. I think we have a big problem in terms of reaching all Hispanic residents to the extent that we would like because many of our Latino residents are hesitant about letting it be known that they are there and in need of a public service, he explains.
It is a difficult task to go out and win their trust and make them understand that we are here to help and that its safe to use the services we provide. It is our goal to ensure that people know that the services the county provides are safe and available to all residents, Elias adds.
Despite the obstacles, Elias does think the committee has made progress. Westchesters Hispanic population grows exponentially each year and weve made it a priority to recognize different individuals within that community, such as successful business owners and community activists, who have made a positive and productive impact on the community at large, he says. Doing so has helped bring new leaders forward and erased some of the myths people have about Latinos as a whole.
