Tale of Two Teachers- Latina finds inspiration
No One In My Family Understood
I felt no one in my family understood what I was going through, except Grandma. Having been orphaned by the age of 8, with only a primary school education, Grandma worked hard to raise 12 children with my Grandpa Rafael. She baked bread, made candy from scratch and sold foodstuffs in her village to help Grandpa, who worked in the sugar cane fields, provide for their family. Life in rural Honduras was not easy as she woke up early to tend to farm animals and raise 12 children. Nonetheless, Grandma was driven. She did not allow her educational limitation to stop her from doing the best she could with what little materials she had at her disposal and the knowledge she possessed. The only barrier to your success are your thoughts. Grandma has lived by her own words and instilled them in me, her eldest granddaughter, to ensure that I too would become the best person I could be no matter what tools or knowledge I had at my disposal.
My Two Teachers
I frequently recall the words of two wise, courageous and determined teachersGrandma and Abraham Lincoln to get me though lifes most challenging moments. Perhaps neither of them considered themselves teachers but to me, their words were and continue to be inspirational and should also be an inspiration to all Latinos in their quest for success.
I am now in-house counsel for an international logistics company and lead the U.S. legal departments initiatives.
