The Story Behind Café Aromas del Campo: A Legacy of Excellence [Video]

by Johanna Godinez

Café Aromas del Campo is a testament to resilience, tradition, and innovation.

In 1980, Dionisio Custodio and Esther Jiménez, lifelong farmers, laid the foundation for what would become a cherished family business. On their farm, they cultivated yams, plantains, bananas, taro, and, most notably, coffee. With around 17,000 coffee trees, they began processing their own coffee on-site, depulping, handwashing, and sun-drying the beans. Over time, their operations expanded as they acquired machinery to handle larger volumes, including harvests from neighboring farmers.

In the early 1990s, they constructed a modern coffee mill to enhance their production. Tragically, Dionisio passed away shortly after, but Doña Esther carried on with determination. She managed the mill, supervised over 12 workers, and processed coffee from more than 200 farmers. Her grandchildren grew up alongside her, immersed in the family’s coffee traditions, learning the values of hard work and dedication.

In 2006, the family business entered a new chapter when Alberto Méndez Custodio, Dionisio and Esther’s grandson, took the reins alongside his wife, Jomarys López. Their passion and vision led to the official establishment of Café Aromas del Campo in 2008, ensuring the continuation of the family’s proud legacy.

The couple managed every aspect of the coffee production process, from cultivation and milling to roasting, with love and enthusiasm. Under Alberto’s leadership, the company began specializing in premium specialty coffees. In 2010, Alberto earned the prestigious Q Grader certification from the Coffee Quality Institute, a testament to his expertise in coffee quality assessment. That same year, his wife Jomarys also became a certified Q Grader, solidifying their shared commitment to excellence.

Since 2011, Alberto and Jomarys have worked together to lead Café Aromas del Campo, upholding the high standards set by Dionisio and Esther. Their dedication to quality has elevated the company to new heights, offering customers an exceptional coffee experience that reflects the rich heritage and passion of the Custodio family.

Today, Café Aromas del Campo is a testament to resilience, tradition, and innovation. With every cup, they honor their roots and share the story of a family’s unwavering commitment to producing outstanding coffee.
