US Senators and Small Businesses

by Latin Biz Today

Pennsylvania

Bob Casey Jr. – Democratic
Incumbent Since: 1/4/2007
SMB Policies/Laws Passed: Casey’s amendment to a small business research bill was adopted 99-0 by the Senate. He sought to correct the common trend that saw contractors listing minority or women-owned businesses as sub-contractors to strengthen their applications without ever notifying those businesses. His amendment not only requires that those businesses were notified, but made failure to do so a punishable offense.

Pat Toomey – Republican
Incumbent Since: 1/5/2011
SMB Policies/Laws Passed:

    • Emphasizes the fact that he was once a small business owner himself, once operating a small restaurant chain.
    • Believes in laissez-faire economic practices. He is quoted as saying,  “Americans are still the hardest working, most industrious, innovative, entrepreneurial people in the world. And if we just let them, they’ll start more businesses, hire more workers … but first, government has to get out of the way.”
Texas

Kay Bailey Hutchison – Republican
Incumbent Since: 6/14/1993
SMB Policies/Laws Passed:

    • Passed a bipartisan amendment to the Financial Stability Bill (S. 3217), which would guarantee that both community banks and large financial institutions are treated equally when assessing FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insurance premiums. The amendment enables community banks to continue to provide lending and depository services to credit-worthy American families and small businesses.
    • Supports legislation that promotes free enterprise and encourages fair business practices.
