Will Cuban Culture Reclaim Its Place At the Heart of Our America?

We will always consider Cuba as a dish of “moros y cristianos” forever in contrast, forever opposing. But also as an “ajiaco” a blend of a multitude of colors and cultures with strong roots into the past and an optimistic view of the future.

I could never support a dictator, I could never endorse human rights violations, I could never imagine losing my freedom or my property.

Also I can hear some of the voices that got a chance to be part of an academic board when all their predecessors could only hope for a life in poverty and oppression.

I rather look at Cuba today, dream to maximize its potential, work to connect them to the XXI Century.

But not that much so they become a consumer driven society that moves from black Friday to valentine’s day. Not that much that brings racism back, that drives inequality to the point of all other Latin American countries.

Instead, a society that takes education with the same level of quality for all into the future, that keeps building knowledge on science and health, that values sports, creates music, art, colors, food!

A Cuban culture that rejects enough to be safe, embraces enough to be free and builds the conditions to develop a vibrant Cuban culture reclaiming its place at the Heart of our America.

I will relax the trombone now so the words take control of our imagination.
