3 Hispanic Leaders Stand Out in Government
His work in the Westchester County Attorney’s office focuses primarily on municipal law issues, transactional issues and oversight of the office’s Litigation, Appeals, Legislation and Opinions departments. “I work along with approximately 63 attorneys and more than 20 support staff dedicated to providing quality legal work for our residents,” Castro-Blanco explains.
Delgado assumed her role when Astorino took office in January 2010. Her responsibility lies in maintaining an open line of communication among all of the county’s partners in the federal, state, county and local government. Working with Astorino and his chief of staff, George Oros, Delgado handles policymaking decisions on everything from capital projects to construction to senior and youth services. “Daily, I interact with elected and appointed officials at the different levels of government and various community and advocacy groups. My outreach responsibility includes assisting the County Executive with continuing to build our relationship with the Hispanic community,” she explains. “Every day, I brief the County Executive in Spanish on local issues affecting the Hispanic community.”
Hispanic Leaders- Living the Dream
During her three-plus years in Westchester County government, Delgado has seen the Hispanic community boom. More and more Hispanic leaders are participating in government and the political process, she says. The Hispanic community continues to grow and with it comes diversity and awareness. One of the ways others become more aware of the various Hispanic cultures is through the food. “We have wonderful restaurants in our Latin communities – Peruvian, Dominican, Mexican and Ecuadorian that are flourishing and that give the county its zest,” she adds.
She also sees the county’s Hispanic population making strides in entrepreneurial endeavors. “I’m always proud to see Hispanics starting their own businesses or going to school to ensure that they too can achieve the American Dream” Delgado notes. “And in my role, I actually get the chance to help them reach their dreams.”
