6 Guidelines to Transition Between Summer and Fall Work Wear

3.   Pair with fall staples

Rich, textured pieces—think: suede, felt and velvet—add warmth to your summer basics. A well-cut blazer is a crucial piece: it stretches your summer wardrobe by allowing you to create multiple combinations that always look professional. (Yes, yes, yes, favor a blazer over a cardigan).

Another piece that will elevate your wardrobe is a classic trench coat: whether in a neutral (gray, navy, camel) or fall color (bottle green, eggplant) it will go with everything and convey distinction while protecting you from the changing weather. (This goes for men as well!)

4.   Mix and match summer and fall colors

Off-white and pastel colors look great with earth and jewel tones. Take a lilac dress, and add an eggplant blazer. An oatmeal dress looks great with a deep brick-red wool coat.

A bright red summer skirt can be “falled-out” with dark pantyhose and a dark top. The key is to go for contrast and harmony among colors and pieces.

And if you don’t have deep color pieces, you can use accessories to make your summer clothes seasonably appropriate.

A turquoise statement necklace, an orange cashmere scarf, a bordeaux leather belt and bag will complement your outfit with the right amount of autumn.

5.   Get comfortable short heels

Comfortable short heels are a wardrobe staple, ready to complete your professional outfit all year round, and most importantly, they ground you.

If you have to buy a new pair, think about a color that complements your wardrobe and adds a touch of style. Eggplant is my color of choice, as you can wear it all year long, and it goes with all skin tones.

6.   Make it personal!

Always focus on finding a good fit that flatters your body (in cuts and colors) and on achieving a look that reflects who you are.

This will make you feel confident and at ease, and will convey what makes you unique.

Recap:

~ Repurpose summer pieces without regard for the “color rules”

~ Get a well-cut blazer

~ Pair pastels and light colors pieces with deep fall colors
