The Inside Scoop on a Stellar New York Week of Full-on Fashion!

by Tina Trevino

The first few days we’re pure enjoyment seeing the amazing Spring 2016 designs of New York’s Fashion Week

Hello Fashionistas,

Getting to mix and mingle with some of my favorite designers and fellow fashionistas. And although it’s already been going for about 7 days strong, NYFW is still far from over—some of the biggest shows are yet to come this week.

But now it’s time for me to head on over to Europe and do both some Fall retail comp shopping and also take a peek at what London has in store for Spring 2016 during the start of their fashion week.

My first stop will be in Paris and then London and wrapping things up in Dusseldorf. It’s going to be fun to compare and contrast the design landscape of all these great international fashion capitals!

But I would never leave you hanging without a full recap of what we’ve seen so far during NYFW so let’s dive right in to some insight on the top trends for Spring 2016!

Here are some of my favorites from the first few days. In the midst of this fall’s fashion trends where every designer is trying to re-mix the ‘70’s, do chic bohemian, or continue on a post peak trend of more lace—it is absolutely refreshing to see spring headed in to some clean, modern lines.

Two of my favorite shows that I attended with this modern design aesthetic were the Jay Godfried show at Chelsea Piers on Saturday and the Jaer Caban collection which was part of Latin Fashion Week which runs simultaneously with NYFW.

Jaer Caban

Jaer Caban’s jaw dropping Spring 2016 collection inspired by the architecture of his homeland, Puerto Rico.

With its crisp lines, intricate laser cut work, retro-modern vibe and pops of lemon yellow—Caban’s styling looks fresh and clean! There is also a bit of a nod to the early ‘70’s.

This collection definitely pushes the boundaries of technical detailing and that is something that is much needed in the fashion world—new visions of what design can aspire to be. Caban also incorporated jumpsuits as a big spring trend. This silhouette reigned supreme through everyone’s spring collections.

Jay Godfrey

Jay Godfrey’s “gallery” style fashion show at Pier 59 at Chelsea Piers was an artistic statement in pure white. This one-ness of color brought the viewer’s focus directly on to all of the style details of each and every garment—a study in shapes.

With it’s stark clean lines–I was able to really hone in and notice the beautiful angular lines which were sometimes accented with a soft feminine flounce, exaggerated slits, triangular neck straps, and strategic cut-outs. Another architectural almost origami inspired collection

Some of my other favorite early shows during fashion week included Vera Wang, Narcisco Rodriguez, Cochine et Och, and Zang Toi. They all kept the majority of their collections clean lined.

Vera Wang

Vera Wang’s sleek modern Spring 2016 collection is also angular with touches of athletic influence. The bright pops of crimson sprinkled through-out keep things from getting too serious for spring

I absolutely loved her play on dimensional fabrics like shiny textures, drapey leather (which we’ll see in many other spring collections), and sheer-crisp lined shapes in transparent crystalline fabrics. I love the mixing of sporty looks with dramatic and dressy. Who else could dress up a sports bra like this?

Narcisco Rodriguez

Narcisco Rodriguez is also a spring stand-out

With his mix of sporty elements, simplified slashes of big asymmetrical stripes and his mixed hues of yellow varying from lemon to butter, there is most definitely a sleek modern feel. Definitely take notice of the repetition across designers utilizing  crisp white, sunny yellows, leather and sleek modern lines.
