A Star’s Act 2
She is writing a book about her experiences on and off the golf course, and has tentative plans for a new career as a motivational speaker.
LatinBusinessToday recently caught up by phone with Ochoa in Mexico City, where she lives with Aeroméxico CEO Andrés Conesa Labastida. The couple is expecting their first child together in December. Mr. Labastida has three children from a previous marriage.
LBT: Do you think you will return to professional golf one day?
Lorena Ochoa: I continue to play and do golf clinics. And, of course, I’m involved in golf course design. I remain involved with the game, and enjoy it as much as I can. My family is my priority right now, though. I want to have a normal life. I don’t know how many children I want. My husband already has three from his previous marriage.
LBT: Tell us about your educational initiative in Guadalajara.
LO: The Lorena Ochoa Foundation operates La Barranca, a primary school in Guadalajara. About 370 underprivileged kids are enrolled. We have an innovative curriculum. Now we also have a high school with 90 kids.
LBT: Is it true the children’s parents can take classes at your school in the evenings?
LO: The whole facility is open all day and night. Students can play basketball and soccer, and practice judo. Parents can use computers. Now we’re building a soccer field for the community to enjoy.
LBT: What gave you the idea to do this? What is different between the way you were educated and the way the children at La Barranca are educated?
LO: I loved school, but I was not a top student because I was always very active. I went to a convent school, and the nuns were strict. Kids in my school are active all the time. I wish I had that same model.
LBT: How can our readers support the school program?
LO: The webpage is www.fundacionlorenaochoa.org. Your readers can be sponsors for the kids.
LBT: What would you like to say to your fans?
LO: I’d like to thank them for their support. I’m really enjoying this part of my life. The foundation is my priority. I want to help as many kids as I can.
