Cuban Latina M.D. Is Committed to Her Patients and Community
Meet Lisa C. Martinez a 2016 Hispanic Woman of Distinction, M.D., Founding Program Director – Internal Medicine Program, University of Miami at Holy Cross Hospital
“I think one of the most important roles Hispanic women can play in society today is providing support and encouragement for our young women to succeed in whatever life pursuit they may have.” Lisa C. Martinez, M.D., Founding Program Director – Internal Medicine Program, University of Miami at Holy Cross Hospital
There doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day for Lisa C. Martinez, M.D. to do everything she wants to accomplish.
As a physician in internal medicine she works at the University of Miami at Holy Cross Hospital and does community outreach for organizations such as the Light of the World Clinic, Broward Community and Family Health Centers and the Caridad Center in Boynton Beach as well as seeing a myriad of patients at health fairs and similar events throughout the year.
Working in the day-to-day world of medicine, Lisa realized the need to train physicians in the field of internal medicine but that such opportunities were limited in Broward County. With that in mind, Lisa set about the arduous task of creating a residency program in internal medicine in association with University of Miami at Holy Cross Hospital and became its program’s founding director.
Lisa has developed a program to educate doctors in training; helping them gain skills to be excellent, caring physicians that give back to the community and are aware of the changes occurring in medicine so that they can impart a positive impact. Furthermore, recognizing that being an excellent physician didn’t necessarily make them good teachers, she launched a “Teaching Teachers to Teach” program where healers learn how to educate fellow doctors, the community and their patients.
She received her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed both her residency and chief residency at the University of Virginia.
Lisa was honored to receive the University of Miami’s George Paff Teaching Award and the Anne L. Brodie Resident Clinician Award for Excellence in Primary Care at the University of Virginia.
In her limited free time she enjoys spending time with her large Cuban family, biking and swimming with her two young children and husband, Sean Martinez, M.D. a radiologist, at their home in Palm Beach County.
