Invest in Your People

With a small business, there are always different choices concerning where to invest your money. I’m not talking about investing in the stock market. I’m talking about investing in the growth of your business and investing in your family’s future. Should you buy new computers, a new truck, new equipment or hire more employees? Or is there a better place to put your money so that your business can grow?

One investment in your business that will pay dividends time and time again is an investment in your people – your employees. Train them. Teach them. I once saw a newspaper cartoon where two people were talking about employee training. One person said, “What if I train my employees and then they leave?” The next cartoon slide was the other person responding “What if you don’t train them and they stay?” You need good employees, trained employees, to help make your company successful.

It is very expensive for a small business to lose a key employee. That person takes with him or her all the training you paid for. Training, experience, and skills are what make employees valuable to a company.

If you want your employees to do their best for your company, you have to give them room to grow. Give them opportunities to improve themselves. It can cost some money to do so, but its well worth the many benefits your company will derive. It is an investment that will reap rewards for your business.

Training workshops and seminars are available all over the place, but you don’t have to send employees out for a day to get them trained. If you already have good skilled employees, maybe they can train the new ones. If you yourself have a specific skill set, maybe you can provide the training. If it’s too difficult to train during the normal workday, do lunch training sessions or have people come in an hour early for a training session.

For a small business, it is often better to have short training sessions rather than a day long session. Maybe try an hour session at first, just to get started. Try training sessions at different times of the day to see what works best for you and your employees. Short sessions are sometimes best – give people small pieces of information that they can use right away in their jobs. You will see the results right away.
