Jetting Off the Runway

Along with his business partner, David Goodrave, Mr.Rodriguez has had his company, David & David New York, Inc., for eight years. He’s always held to the tenet that “this is a business – a creative and artistic one, but still a business.” Recently, Latin Business had the opportunity to interview Mr. Rodriguez about his design philosophies, his experiences, and his successes. Latin Business: Could you tell us about your background? What values did your family and upbringing instill in you that helped your drive to succeed? Mr. Rodriguez: I was born and raised in Indio, Calif, which is in the desert near Palm Springs. As the second oldest of six kids, I think the most important thing is that my parents always supported our individuality. My mom and dad were so great about helping each of us pursue what we loved. My biggest love growing up was horses and I was lucky enough that my Grandpa came from a long line of rancheros in Mexico. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in fashion? What were your influences? Anything specific in your background that gave you unique inspiration? I think I discovered you could have a career in fashion in the 8th grade. I started reading Vogue magazine, then in high school took sewing classes and started watching “Style” with Elsa Klensch religiously – my brothers and sisters would get into it too! My biggest style influence has always been my mom, who is very old school and doesn’t leave the house until she’s made up, hair done, wearing heels or wedges for extra height and dressed – and not in a track suit! My family has always been very involved in not only cultural but also religious events. What about being Latino? Did the Latino community give you tangible support that is unique to that community? My heritage and culture are the foundation for my style! Growing up I learned to appreciate embroideries, lace and the pageantry of Mexican traditions. We used to have Mariachi outfits made for us and I loved my little suit with all the cool embroidery! Where did you go to school and how did what you learned help you succeed? Did you receive any financial support or assistance and, if so, from where I went to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, where I really learned the technical skills of not only design but also construction. I was lucky enough to receive a grant as well as a small scholarship from the Future Homemakers of America! I just thought that was so funny, but I was happy to have it and am grateful to my sewing teacher, Mrs. Lutz, who is responsible for awarding me that scholarship, and a pair of shiny new scissors when I graduated.
