U.S. Latino Athletes Poised to Shine in London


Steven and Diana Lopez, taekwondo: Hailing from Sugar Land, Texas, the Lopez family makes up half of this summers U.S. Taekwondo team. Nicaraguan-born Steven is a three-time Olympic medalist, including gold medals in Sydney and Athens and a bronze in Beijing. Younger sister Diana took home a bronze medal in Beijing. Older brother Jean will coach his siblings in London.

Carmelo Anthony and Diana Taurasi, basketball: Expected to dominate in London, the U.S. men’s basketball team will include New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. Named after his Puerto Rican father, he will be expected to hold the American team together with his strong all-around play. Guard/forward Diana Taurasi will help lead the women’s team. The former WNBA MVP, who is of Argentinian and Italian descent, has her sights set on a third gold medal.
