What Will a Trump Presidency Mean for Latino Business Owners?

Richard Aguilar, a Latino business owner in St. Paul, was even more effusive in his praise saying: “[In Trump], we get a business leader,” Aguilar said. “We’ve got a president who wants to lower taxes and cut back our regulations. He wants to let everyone know businesses create jobs, not the government. I’ve never seen a more relieved business community in my life. I, for one, am very relieved.”

Still, there is no doubt that the president-elect will do much to set the tone for his administration when it comes to reaching out to the Latino business community.

That is, if he decides to pursue an overly aggressive and partisan agenda upon taking office, it will do little to mend fences or build bridges to the Latino community. But if the president-elect chooses to expend his political capital on either tax reform or infrastructure spending, it’s possible the business Latino community will warm up to Republican president and may seek ways to work with him and support his agenda.

Moreover, with a Republican-controlled Congress, all of the GOP has a historic opportunity to build goodwill by supporting policies that will have a direct impact on Latino business owners and businesses that are employing large Latino work forces, including, but not limited to service, retail and construction. Trump’s business acumen could serve him well in this capacity.

But the question remains: will he want to?
