A Latina’s Perspective on the Cultural Heart of Cinco de Mayo

More than a Holiday, Tina Trevino, Latin Biz Today partner shares her perspectives on this Latino holiday

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! The familiar narrative here in the states is that of restaurants plying us with tacos, guacamole, chips and margaritas and store displays filled with sombreros, piñatas and maracas. As a Mexican-American, it always feels like an artificial way to share my heritage, an inauthentic celebration of my culture and a dilution of the historical importance of this date. Treating the day as merely an excuse for drinking and wearing stereotypical costumes trivializes a culture with a rich history, traditions, and artistic expressions.

Most people also believe that this date commemorates the fight for Mexican independence. It does not. It commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, where a poorly equipped Mexican army bravely defeated the much larger and better-equipped French forces. The battle was a David and Goliath story, a moment of unexpected resilience and national pride in the face of European intervention.

While this date is not a major national holiday throughout all of Mexico (the most significant patriotic celebration in Mexico is Mexican Independence Day on September 16th), it is very much celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla, where the battle took place. Celebrations there include military parades, reenactments of the battle, traditional dances, and local festivities.

The significance of the date gets lost in the commercialistic flurry of Cinco de Mayo festivities More than just a footnote for history books or a happy hour drink special, it should be a reminder of the strength and spirit of our ancestors, the ability to stand firm against seemingly insurmountable odds. It’s a symbol of the enduring fight for sovereignty and self-determination that has echoed throughout Latin American history.

Beyond the battlefield, Cinco de Mayo also subtly whispers stories of cultural preservation. In a time of foreign influence, the victory at Puebla bolstered Mexican confidence and helped safeguard their cultural identity. This resonates deeply with the ongoing experiences of many Latinos, navigating the delicate balance of honoring our heritage while also embracing new environments. We carry within us the languages, traditions, and flavors of our homelands, a vibrant tapestry woven through our daily lives.

Cinco de Mayo, at its heart, carries a powerful energy and vibe that can be channeled into our daily lives, even long after May 5th. Here’s how you can tap into that spirit:

  1. Embrace the Puebla Spirit: At its core, Cinco de Mayo celebrates an underdog victory fueled by courage and resilience. Reflect on challenges you’re facing and channel that “Puebla spirit” to stand firm and believe in your ability to overcome obstacles.
  2. Find Your Fiesta: The celebratory aspect of Cinco de Mayo reminds us to cultivate joy and celebration in the everyday. Make time for activities you enjoy, connect with loved ones, and celebrate small victories. It doesn’t need to be a huge party – a delicious meal, a fun outing, or even just putting on some upbeat music can capture that vibe.
  3. Share Your Roots: Take pride in your cultural background and find ways to share it with those around you – through stories, food, traditions, or art.
  4. Infuse Your Life with Flavor and Spice: Embrace the vibrant flavors of Mexican cuisine (or any cuisine you love!). Experiment with new recipes, add some spice to your meals, and savor the experience of trying new tastes.

The energy of Cinco de Mayo is about resilience, celebration, cultural pride, vibrant flavors, community, and being present. You can weave these threads into your daily life by consciously incorporating these values and actions, making each day a little more spirited and meaningful. Think of it as carrying a little bit of that festive and courageous energy with you, no matter the date.
