Latina Powerhouse Kiki Melendez’s Next Act [podcast]

by Tina Trevino

Kiki has traded Hollywood profit for transformative compassion

We’ve just launched Season 2 of our Cafecito with Latin Biz Today podcast in an all new video format and had a very inspiring premiere episode with the one and only Kiki Melendez, known as a trailblazing actress and comedian, and also a producer with mission to use the power of filmmaking to bring awareness and compassion to the plight of homeless children in Latin America.

A Latina Carving Out Her Own Space

Kiki’s story is the definition of hustle. She started out on the airwaves as a radio host before making the jump to TV in a time of little representation of Latinas. We discussed what it’s really like breaking barriers as a Latina in the film industry.

Kiki’s journey exemplifies what it means to be a Latina trailblazer in a tough Hollywood industry. Recognizing the persistent problem of underrepresentation—where roles were often scarce and stereotypes were rampant—Kiki didn’t wait for permission or a studio executive to offer her a spot. Instead, she took decisive action to build her own table. Leveraging her skills, particularly her bilingualism and deep cultural authenticity, she transitioned successfully from a powerful radio presence to a television personality launching notable shows like “Kiki Desde Hollywood” and “Hot Tamales Live!” In a business known for polite deflection and carefully curated personas, Kiki’s willingness to be blunt, honest, raw, and comedic wasn’t just entertaining—it was and still remains one of her greatest professional tools. She quickly proved that having an unfiltered voice and a quick wit are essential for breaking through industry ceilings.

With support from industry figures, she launched her own platform, showing that her unique background was not a barrier, but asset. This proactive approach involved not just gaining success, but shaping the narrative and creating her own opportunities, transforming her personal experiences and cultural roots into a source of professional strength and leverage in a demanding, often homogenous, entertainment landscape.

A Personal Story Fuels the Film, “Niños De Cristo’s Forgotten Voices of Latin America” Authenticity

The interview got personal when Kiki opened up about her own journey and emotional relationship with her adopted son, Nathaniel. This deeply personal story is the foundation of her current project. Kiki stressed the non-negotiable importance of trust and communication with her son, Nathaniel, ensuring he’s completely comfortable participating in this film. This ensures that the film’s message is rooted in her own family’s love and challenges.

Kiki is looking to make social impact with the film, putting the stories of homeless children in Latin America—children who desperately need a voice—front and center in “Niños De Cristo Forgotten Voices of Latin America”

The film tackles the painful reality that these children are often viewed as second-class citizens and marginalized. She’s fighting the social indifference that keeps people from finding empathy in their situations and reaching out to provide help.

Kiki is leveraging her success to bring transformative compassion to the most vulnerable. She and the rest of the team involved with making the movie have pledged that the film is not about making personal financial profit.

The Grind: Film Festivals and Advocacy

Kiki is aiming high—she wants the film to premiere at top-tier film festivals and is also leveraging her relationships with national theater chains to secure wider distribution.

A frustrating hurdle she faces is the lack of corporate engagement in projects like hers that are purely dedicated to advocating for these children. She’s fighting not just for a deal, but for a fair structure so that more money can flow directly back to children’s causes.

It was a privilege to share a cafecito with Kiki, and all of us at Latin Biz Today can’t wait to see the incredible impact this film will have!
