“Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
I am honored to write this letter in enthusiastic support of Maribel Pérez Wadsworth for the Latina Pioneer Award from Hispanic Women of Distinction. As the first Hispanic woman and the first woman to serve as President and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Maribel has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to advancing journalism, arts, culture, democracy, and community engagement.
Born, raised, and educated in Miami and while she never entirely left Miami, she has returned home with national presence and impact as the President and CEO of the Knight Foundation. Maribel elevates our South Florida community and our Hispanic community. She is a force for good for our community, our nation, and the world.
Maribel’s journey is a testament to her dedication and pioneering spirit. Beginning her career as a reporter, she ascended to prominent roles, including President of Gannett Media and Publisher of USA TODAY. In these capacities, she oversaw a vast network of over 230 local news organizations, championing responsible journalism and fostering informed communities. Her tenure at Gannett was marked by significant achievements, including the organization receiving five Pulitzer Prizes in five years, underscoring her commitment to journalistic excellence.

She has served as Alumni Assoc President and a valued Trustee of the University of Miami, her alma mater, reflecting her dedication to education and community development. Her leadership roles extend to serving as Board Chair of Skillshare, and as a director at both the Associated Press and the Pew Research Center, where she has influenced the broader media landscape with her visionary insights.
Maribel’s pioneering efforts have not gone unnoticed. Her accolades include the Robert G. McGruder Diversity Leadership Award from the News Leaders Association in 2019, recognizing her unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion in journalism. She was also inducted into the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Hall of Fame and the University of Miami’s Iron Arrow, the highest honor given at the University. Such honors reflect her profound impact on the industry and the communities she serves.
