Puerto Rican Latina Humanitarian, Yoga Instructor and Orthopedic Surgeon
Meet Mirylsa Colon-Martinez, a 2019 Hispanic Woman of Distinction, MD, FAAOS, Orthopedist-Owner, OrthoWellness
“We have an obligation to excel at anything we do, and represent our countries and heritage with dignity.”
As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in ankle and foot injuries, Dr. Mirylsa Colon-Martinez strives to get her patients back on their feet as quickly as possible. As a humanitarian, she uses her training in holistic treatments and as a certified yoga instructor to help others enjoy their best lives.
In 2017, after leaving a group practice, Mirylsa overcame extensive odds when she opened her solo practice in Boca Raton. OrthoWellness is a five-star rated boutique, trauma-conscious orthopedic and wellness/MedSpa practice inspired by the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study conducted by the American Health Maintenance Organization Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As a yoga instructor, Mirylsa volunteers with Connection Coalition to help those affected by trauma such as children in foster care. She also is actively involved as an administrator and volunteer for the grass roots organization Doctoras Boricuas. What started as a Facebook networking group for physician/moms, Doctoras Boricuas members sprang into action in September, 2017 when Hurricane Maria decimated Mirylsa’s home country of Puerto Rico.
In less than a week, these dynamic physicians collected money and materials and coordinated with other doctors both here and in Puerto Rico to get needed medical supplies and personnel onsite to help those on the island in such desperate need.
In addition to her private practice and volunteer work, Mirylsa also works as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Nova Southeastern University Medical School and Assistant Professor for Surgery for Northwest Medical Center’s Podiatry Program.
Mirylsa received her Bachelor of Science degree and earned her Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She did her fellowship training at Harvard University and has received additional training in facial rejuvenation and aesthetics including the use of neurotoxins and fillers which she has incorporated into her private practice. She also has completed numerous other medical courses around the United States and is a member of Medical Honor Society Alpha Omega Alpha.
She has frequently presented at medical conferences and community workshops and was named one of America’s Top Orthopedists, received a Leading Physicians of the World Award, a Mentoring Excellence Award and was named the Mentor of the Year/Xcel from the Females’ Center of Excellence and Leadership at Northeastern University.
Mirylsa, along with her husband, Emanuel Garcia, who is a real estate investor, and their two children, Genesis and Estefania, enjoy vacationing in Puerto Rico, boating, yoga, music and the performing arts.
