Latina CEO Is a Devoted Wellness Advocate for Individuals & Families
Meet 2024 Hispanic Woman of Distinction, Susan Nyamora, CEO, South Florida Wellness Network, Inc.
“Hispanic women role models exemplify the strength, resilience and determination in overcoming challenges and making a difference in society.”
As the CEO of the South Florida Wellness Network, Inc., Susan Nyamora understands what the ancient Roman poet, Virgil, meant when he wrote, “the greatest health is wealth.”
Wealth in this case exemplifies that health means you’ll live a longer, happier life, you won’t have to endure the rising costs of healthcare and you’ll be able to work longer and more efficiently toward your goals. Focusing primarily on ending drug abuse is what Susan and her organization have been working towards.
She’s also worked intently with Floridians for Recovery and the Florida Harm Reduction Collective advocating for overdose prevention, harm reduction, and recovery support services. Susan’s also organized the statewide Recovery Leadership Summit and played a key role in creating awareness campaigns and educational activities to not only try to halt addiction, but also to combat the stigma and discriminatory practices against individuals with substance abuse or mental health challenges no matter their financial status.
Under her leadership, the South Florida Wellness Network has grown exponentially, employing more than 70 individuals in recovery efforts serving Broward County and expanding services to Miami-Dade County. Susan’s efforts have led to the successful implementation of co-responder pilots with local law enforcement and the establishment of youth services across the county.
The rising statistics easily show that these programs are especially important when looking at the cause of death of pre-teens and adolescents. In as little as two years, the median monthly overdose deaths from opioids increased 109% between 2019 and 2021.
Beyond her position, Susan’s participation includes community and professional groups fighting the drug epidemic such as the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and serving on the United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention’s Board of Governors.
Susan has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Broward Recovery Month and the Inspiring Women of Health Honoree in 2021.
